Rare surgery to remove thyroid tumor saves women’s life
Vaheeda Beegum, 31, a native of Lakshadweep went through a life-threatening condition caused by a huge thyroid tumour which had grown into her chest cavity. She developed severe stridor and was put on a ventilator as the tumour was blocking her respiratory passage completely. Followingly, as her condition got worse, Vaheeda was airlifted from Lakshadweep and was saved from a near-death condition through a surgery at VPS Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi. The complex surgical procedure was carried out by the team led by Dr.R. Padmakumar, Dr. Madhukar Pai and Dr Sujith D.S. The expert medical team managed to remove the tumour intercepting the heart and major vessels, safeguarding the bronchus and trachea. Vaheeda is now doing well and is able to talk, breathe and eat normally.
