Transfusion of blood components is an integral part of patient management. The blood bank at VPS lakeshore functions round the clock to provide timely and adequate transfusion support to the various clinical departments.  We have efficient and competent staff and state of the art equipment ensuring that good quality blood components are prepared as per the quality standards.

The components prepared include packed red cells plasma, platelets concentrate, cryoprecipitate and specialized components viz irradiated products and leucodepleted components (for minimizing the adverse effects of transfusion). Platelets are also prepared by apheresis whereby platelets obtained from 6-8 donors can be obtained from a single person thus reducing the number of donor exposures to the patient.

Screening of the blood for transfusion transmitted diseases (TTls) is done by the highly  sensitive electrochemiluminescence method.

In immunohematology, column agglutination technique is used for crossmatching to enhance the sensitivity of the test. In addition to the routine blood grouping and crossmatching, antibody screening and identification to identify irregular antibodies implicated in hemolytic disease of newborn and transfusion reactions are also done.
