The department of pathology in VPS lakeshore runs a fully fledged laboratory providing complete range of diagnostic services In the following subspecialties of pathology-Histopathology with frozen section & immunohistochemistry, Cytopathology, Haematology and Flow cytometry. The various labs are located in the 1st and 2nd floor of the parent building of the VPS Lakeshore hospital. The department is headed by the Director of laboratory services and supported by four senior consultants with training in specific fields and three senior registrars, in addition to experienced and dedicated technical and other supporting staffs.
The department processes approximately 22500 specimens per year, of which approximately 10500 are surgical specimens. This includes specimens from VPS Lakeshore hospital and referrals from other hospitals. The rest of the specimens are composed of cytology specimens which includes fluid cytology, US/CT/ EUS guided fine needle aspiration cytology and specimens for immunofluorescence , flow cytometry, frozen sections and immunohistochemistry, and has expertise for evaluating renal, liver and cardiac transplant related biopsies. Liquid cytology, determination of hormone receptor in breast carcinoma, immunohistochemistry of lymphoma/leukemia, soft tissue and epithelial tumors are performed routinely in department.
The lab is integrated with Hospital information system to facilitate rapid transmission of results to the clinician. The department participates in stringent external and internal quality assurance programmes and has ISO and NABH accreditation and is in the process of obtaining NABL accreditation.
The Indian collage of pathology ( ICP ) has recognized the department of pathology at VPS Lakeshore for conducting Post Doctoral Certificate Course(PDCC) in Gastrointestinal and Hepatic pathology. The department is also recognized for DNB in pathology.
The department is open from 9 am to 6 pm with provision to accept specimens in non working hours and on holidays and endeavors to provide "Time bound, precise and accurate reports" to enable proper management of patients.
