VPS Lakeshore Hospital Chairman Dr Shamsheer Vayalil Announces Free Surgery and Treatment

Kochi: Bringing relief to Avani and her family, Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, Chairman of VPS Lakeshore Hospital, has directed that Avani’s surgery and all subsequent treatment be provided free of cost. Avani, who sustained serious injuries in an accident on her wedding day, underwent an emergency marriage ceremony in the hospital’s Emergency Department.

On learning about the unusual circumstances under which the wedding took place, Dr Shamsheer conveyed through VPS Lakeshore Managing Director S. K. Abdulla that the hospital would bear all expenses related to Avani’s surgery and care.

Describing a hospital becoming a wedding venue as a rare experience, Dr Shamsheer said the couple's determination to go ahead with the ceremony despite all adversities was truly heartwarming. He added that the doctors, healthcare workers, and management of VPS Lakeshore stand firmly with the family. He also wished Avani a speedy recovery through expert medical care.

S. K. Abdulla personally met Avani’s husband, Sharon; her parents, Jagadeesh and Jyothi; and her brother, Atul, and reassured them of complete support. The family expressed their gratitude to VPS Lakeshore Hospital and Dr Shamsheer Vayalil for standing with them during their most difficult time.

Avani’s spine surgery was successfully completed at the hospital. Led by Dr Sudish Karunakaran, Head of Neurosurgery, the surgery began at 9.35 AM on Saturday and concluded around noon. Avani had suffered major injuries to her hip bone and a critical L4 vertebra fracture. The nerve compression was corrected through a complex surgical procedure, Dr Sudish said. Specialists from Neurosurgery, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia, and Cardiothoracic Surgery formed the multidisciplinary team that handled the case. Avani is currently under observation in the Neuro Sciences ICU.

Avani, daughter of M. Jagadeesh and Jyothi of Muthalassery House, Kommaday, Alappuzha, is a teacher at Bishop Moore School, Cherthala. Sharon, son of Manumon and Rashmi of Thumboli Valappil House, is an Assistant Professor at KVM College of Engineering and Information Technology, Cherthala. Their wedding was originally scheduled to take place at Thumboli on Friday afternoon.

However, at around 3 AM on Friday, Avani met with a major accident at Kumarakom while travelling for her bridal makeup preparations. She was rushed to VPS Lakeshore with serious injuries. Respecting the family’s wish and adhering to the pre-set wedding time between 12.15 PM and 12.30 PM, the couple exchanged vows in the Emergency Department itself.
