VPS Lakeshore completes 100 bone and soft tissue cancer surgeries in two years

Kochi: The Bone and Soft Tissue Cancer Clinic at VPS Lakeshore Hospital, Kochi, has completed 100 surgeries in just two years, marking a milestone in the treatment of rare and complex cancers affecting bones and soft tissues.

The announcement was made at a press meet attended by VPS Lakeshore Managing Director SK Abdulla, Head of Orthopaedics Dr Jacob Varghese, Consultant Orthopaedic Oncologist Dr Ebin Rahman, who leads the clinic and CEO Jayesh V Nair.

Doctors noted that bone cancer, though rare, is most often seen in children and adolescents, but awareness remains low. Many parents dismiss persistent pain as “growing pains,” leading to late diagnosis. “People still don’t realise that cancer can affect bone as well. Any unexplained pain, swelling or lump should be checked without delay,” said Dr Rahman.

Until a few years ago, amputation was the only treatment option for many patients with advanced bone tumours. VPS Lakeshore has now made advanced limb-salvage procedures routine. In some cases, surgeons are able to remove the cancer-affected bone, sterilise it with high-dose radiation outside the body, and re-implant it. “This allows patients to keep their own bones, regain mobility and continue their lives without the trauma of losing a limb. For young patients, this is life-changing,” Dr Rahman added.

Dr Jacob Varghese said the 100 surgeries included several rare sarcoma cases requiring long, complex operations with multidisciplinary involvement. “This milestone demonstrates our growing expertise in orthopaedic oncology and establishes VPS Lakeshore as a referral hub for bone and soft tissue cancer care,” he said.

Managing Director SK Abdulla emphasised the hospital’s commitment to delivering world-class cancer treatment within the state. “Patients no longer need to travel outside Kerala for specialised bone and soft tissue cancer care. With this achievement, our doctors have shown that advanced cancer treatment is available right here in Kochi,” he said.
