VPS Lakeshore Hospital Creates History with India’s First Wireless Arthroscopy

Kochi: VPS Lakeshore Hospital has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first hospital in India to successfully perform a wireless arthroscopy. This pioneering advancement in orthopaedic surgery enhances surgical ergonomics, hospital efficiency, and patient safety.

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat joint conditions through a small camera inserted into the joint. Traditional arthroscopy relies on wired camera and light source connections to transmit visuals, whereas wireless arthroscopy eliminates cables, providing greater manoeuvrability and overall improved sterility.

Dr. George Jacob, Consultant, Orthopaedics at VPS Lakeshore Hospital, led the procedure on a 58-year-old woman, successfully performing a medial meniscus root repair using this state-of-the-art technology. Commenting on the breakthrough, he said, “Wireless arthroscopy is a game-changer. It enhances manoeuvrability in the operative field, reduces contamination risks, and improves overall ergonomics for surgeons.”

He added that traditional wired arthroscopy limited movement in the operative field, prolonged set up and clean up times in the theatre and increased chances of infection with cables moving around the operative draped and field. "Wireless arthroscopy eliminates these constraints, allowing surgeons unrestricted movement, which improves precision and efficiency and reduced setup time between cases. Another key advantage is the reduction in the number of items to be sterilised, as the cables no longer need to be sterilised, effectively reducing costs as well.

"Removing cable clutter leads to a more organised surgical environment, reducing the likelihood of accidental disconnections or obstructions during the procedure This innovation is groundbreaking in the field of orthopaedic surgery. We haven’t seen a lot of innovation lately in arthroscopy, but this is an obvious step forward. Soon with the addition of AI we will see further steps forward in improving arthroscopic surgery.” he said

Sk Abdulla, Managing Director of VPS Lakeshore, expressed the hospital’s commitment to innovation. “Adopting wireless arthroscopy is a major step forward in medical technology. We remain dedicated to bringing cutting-edge advancements to our patients, ensuring the highest standards of care. In addition to wireless arthroscopy, we are the first hospital to introduce the O-Arm machine to capture 3D images of the spine. We are now focusing more on AI-driven medical technology to improve patient care," Abdulla said.
